I remember distinctly being able to rent the SNES console the fall of 1992. I was still in the midst of begging my parents to get one for Christmas, so it was the next best thing renting it. It might have been somewhat pricey but I remember getting to rent 4 games with it. I picked out Super Mario World (because you have to try out the Mario game), Super Ghouls N Ghosts (because I remembered the NES game), Some Gradius/RType looking game called Strike Gunner (I think dad wanted to try that one out), I needed one more, and once I noticed Super Castlevania IV it was a done deal.I was already a fan of the series having spent multiple weekends renting the Castlevania and even Castlevania II, I knew already that the 16-bit upgrade for this series had to be good. And it certainly was. Out of all 4 games I rented that weekend, I played Castlevania IV the most (actually might be a tie with SMW but that was mostly 2-player mode with siblings, but anyway). I'll never forget waiting to watch the opening sequence of Castlevania IV, the lightning striking the tombstone made me jump, not just the first time, but every time I rented that game on and off for the next couple of years.

I always had to watch that opening sequence, it was so cool and still is with that eerie music. I later found this game new in a bargain bin at Toys R US for $10, probably the summer of 2001. I bought it without thinking twice about it and still have it.Okay, I've rambled way too much about this game. Another one of my all-time favorites. To me, this game and Symphony of the night are to two peaks of the series. I appreciate the share.
While I think this entry does some thing right, in a way, I think it was ahead of its time for the Castlevania series, which worked against it. Many players weren't ready for the change in feel, as each entry prior was more simplistic. That being said, I want to revisit the title now to see how well it plays in modern times. It's been a very long time since I dedicated time to it, as I would usually default to Dracula's Curse or Symphony of the Night if I was in the Castlevania mood.
